The Islandview Village community is strategically located on the near east side of the City of Detroit with excellent proximity to the Central Business District (CBD) and the major employment, commercial, civic, cultural and entertainment resources of the downtown area.
With frontage on East Jefferson Avenue and the Detroit River, the area is part of the redevelopment corridor emanating from the CBD to Harbortown located at the southwestern corner of the community. Islandview Village also lies along East Grand Boulevard, historically a main artery of the inner city leading to the entrance to Belle Isle, a major urban park and recreational resource. The area contains many transportation connections to downtown and the rest of the city on Jefferson, Lafayette, Kercheval, Vernor and Mack avenues in the east-west direction and on east Grand Boulevard and Van Dyke in the north/south direction. Automobile access to the freeway system is excellent along Mt. Elliott, Jefferson, Lafayette, or Vernor providing convenient commuting to major employment centers.
An existing business and industrial corridor runs through the western portion of the neighborhood, generally from Mt. Elliott to Bellevue Street. Formerly, a rail spur ran through this area. The rail spur is now vacant and available for re-use and development. The Mt. Elliott/Bellevue Corridor contains several longstanding and viable light manufacturing operations, warehouses, stores and other commercial businesses.
CMHC's Housing Services handles the marketing and leasing of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) financed properties managed by CMHC. Also, CMHC is one of the sites that participates in the State of Michigan's Individual Development Account (IDA) program. This program provides opportunities for families of limited means to save money either for continuing their education, a down payment to purchase a home or for starting a business. CMHC's Housing Services Division became nationally known for its former Homeownership Program which counseled and prepared limited resource and public housing individuals and families to become homeowners. In recognition of the need for qualified potential single-family homebuyers to obtain mortgage financing, CMHC developed a housing counseling and economic literacy training program. The program consisted of individual credit counseling, savings support program and training to help potential homebuyers become mortgageable so as to be able to purchase a home.
